Summer Reading Challenge

Summer Reading Challenge Slide

Our Summer Reading Challenge is open to children of all ages and runs Monday, June 29 – Friday, July 31. This year’s theme is “Imagine Your Story,” with a focus on fairy tales, mythology, and folklore. Reading 20 minutes a day for 20 days earns readers a book prize to be distributed at a later date.

How to Register

To create a safe and fun Summer Reading Challenge, a few changes were made to the program this year. Readers may use our online service, Beanstack, to register for the challenge, track reading progress, and earn badges for participating in virtual activities.

Readers can also log reading on our paper calendars which are distributed with book checkouts. Those using a paper reading log should mark an X on the calendar for each day of reading. Completed calendars may be turned in at any branch.

Take and Make Bags

Because we cannot be together for programs, take some goodies home! Take and make bags for children include craft supplies, stem challenges, games, and more. Take and make bags are available with checkouts from the Children’s Department. Bags change weekly, so children will have new activities all summer.

Themed Reading Totes

We’re also offering tote bags of books, movies, audiobooks, and DVDs on various themes. Interested in dragons, mythology, super heroes, or pirates? Give one of our totes a try!

Virtual Programs

Join us online for virtual story times, book recommendations, games, and social media challenges throughout July. Follow our Youth Services Facebook page or call the Children’s Department at (276) 676-6382 for more information.

WCPL greatly appreciates the continued support of the Friends of the Library and the Kiwanis Club of Abingdon, whose generous donations fund our Beanstack program and book prizes.
