Summer Reading Program 2023

WAYS TO PARTICIPATE

*Track your reading! Get a Summer Reading tracker and mark off each day that you read. Return your tracker to any of our libraries once a week to enter a prize drawing!

*Complete a scavenger hunt! Can you find all the hidden pictures at the library? Test your detective skills by completing our weekly scavenger hunt challenges!

*Enjoy a Summer Reading event! Our Summer Reading schedule is packed with interactive storytimes, crafts, games, and guest performances!

*Take a library road trip! Pick up a Summer Reading Passport and visit all five WCPL locations to win a prize!

KICKOFF EVENT

It’s the first day of Summer Reading! Stop by any of our libraries on Saturday, June 4th from 10-2 for games, treats, and a goodie bag. Plus, stock up on library books for our reading challenge!

STORYTIME

Join us for “All Together Now” storytime featuring songs, picture books, rhymes, and movement for early literacy! Abingdon Library every Tuesday at 10:30. Branch libraries every Wednesday at 10:30. Recommended for ages 0-5.

BALLAD FAMILY PLAYTIME

Join us at the Abingdon library Thursdays mornings at 10:30 for fun family resources from Ballad Health! We’ll have bonding activities for children and caregivers. Recommended for ages 0-5.

CSI FORENSICS CHALLENGE

A special visit from the Hands-On Discovery Center! Become a crime scene detective as you work to investigate, reconstruct, analyze, and identify a culprit! Please see the SRP calendar for program dates and times. Recommended for ages 8-12.

DARIN HANDY’S AMAZING CREATURES

Wildlife rehabilitator Darin Handy will introduce us to reptiles, birds, and other incredible wild creatures of Southwest Virginia! Please see the SRP calendar for program dates and times. All ages welcome.

MOVIN’ AND GROOVIN’

A special visit from the Hands-On Discovery Center! March to the beat of your own drum and dance with our giant parachute. Please see the SRP calendar for program dates and times. Recommended for ages 5-8.

KINDNESS CRAFTS

Learn how to make beautiful shareable crafts to spread positivity and brighten someone’s day in this crafting workshop for all ages. Friday, June 16th at 11a.m. at all library locations. Recommended for ages 5-12.

DIY MUSIC MAKERS

For the grand finale of Summer Reading, make your own musical instruments and put on a collaborative jam session! Friday, July 14th at 11a.m. at all library locations. Recommended for ages 5-12.

SPREAD THE LOVE

Just for Teens! Express yourself and share kindness around the community with these funky, unique crafting projects. Thursday, June 8th at 3p.m. at all library locations. Recommended for ages 12-18.

FRIENDSHIP JEWELRY EXTRAVANGANZA

Just for Teens! Learn amazing techniques for making bracelets, necklaces, and other kinds of handmade jewelry to share with friends! Thursday, June 22nd at 3p.m. at all library locations. Recommended for ages 12-18.

POSITIVE PAINTING

Just for Teens! Paint a rock to hide in the community or a flowerpot for your garden-the options are endless in this fun and relaxing painting class! Thursday, July 6th at 3p.m. at all library locations. Recommended for ages 12-18.
