Strong Appalachian Women

March 15, 2026 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

In honor of Women’s History Month, Theresa Burriss, PhD, will celebrate many of the courageous, fierce women of Appalachia, who defy negative and reductive stereotypes that persist to this day.

Whether real life heroines, such as Helen Matthews Lewis, Hazel Dickens, Marat Moore, and Suzanne Stryk, or fictional ones, such as Lydia Moore McQueen, Gertie Nevels, Ivy Rowe, and Carrie Bishop, all the women serve as powerful role models to women and men alike, Appalachian or not. Come be inspired by these women’s amazing life stories!
