COLLECTIONS


Our Library has a great selection of materials, both old and new, for you to check out. The collections listed below are always changing as we update them and add patron requests.

If you are looking for a particular author, title, or subject, check  HAL, our online catalog. Ask a staff person for assistance in using the  catalog or pick up the HAL brochure. 

Our book collection includes:

  • Popular materials
  • Classics
  • Non-fiction on almost any subject
  • Reference materials
  • Large print books
  • Popular paperbacks
  • Picture books for non-readers
  • Children’s books for different reading levels
  • Young adult materials
  • Local, regional, and Virginia materials

Books On Tape

The main portion of this collection is housed at the Main Library; however, each branch library has a smaller rotating collection of titles. Included are:

  • Fiction books (popular and classics)
  • Non-fiction, including self-help, language guides, biographies and other informational topics.

Magazines 

The Library subscribes to an extensive list of titles that includes just about every interest and hobby you can imagine. We also have a special collection of magazines for younger readers. These are located in the children’s section of each library.

Videos

Video titles are selected to educate and to entertain. Please see our Video Loan Policy. The collection is arranged by the following categories:

  • Children/Family
  • How To
  • Documentary
  • Seasonal
  • Western
  • Comedy
  • Feature
  • Foreign
  • Musical

Compact Discs (CDs) - Musical

The Main Library has an assortment of musical CDs.
The titles include:

  • Classical music
  • Popular artists
  • Works of interest to children and adults.

Compact Discs (CD-ROMs) - Computer Format

This is our newest collection and hence our smallest. These items are currently available at the Main Library only. The selection policy for this collection states that we will include titles that have some educational merit. Games may be included if they support some area of instruction.

Special Collections

Book Kits

The Library has a special collection of book kits offered through a program we call  BOOKS AND BEYOND. This educational resource is available to those who will use the kits in an educational group setting. The book kits are:

  • Theme oriented.
  • Contain multiple titles of books.
  • Contain an assortment of activities and props that expand the understanding and appreciation of the books.

Audiovisual Equipment

The following types of equipment may be checked out at the Main Library for a fee:

  • Slide projectors ($5.00 per day)
  • Screens ($5.00 per day)
  • Overhead  projector ($5.00 per day)

Patron Requests

How do I request that the library purchase an item for its permanent collection?

  • Obtain and complete a Request For Purchase form at the circulation desk.
    (Please note that all such requests may not be purchased.)

How will I know the library's decision on my request for purchase?

  • If this item is purchased, you will be notified when it becomes available.

What do I do if I want to borrow an item located in other HAL libraries?

  • Obtain and complete an interlibrary loan form at the circulation desk or reference desk.
