Subject Directories
Subject directories order the web into manageable pieces. Instead of one huge
haystack, there are any number of smaller haystacks to look through. In some cases this is done by individuals (At one time Yahoo! relied on real life indexers.) Librarians such as Gary Price have also attempted to tame the wild web by indexing. Below are some examples:
Search Engines and Meta Search Engines
- New from Amazon:A9
- Metacrawler, performs your search across multiple search engines, bringing back ranked results (may include "paid placement" results, meaning Webcrawler, like Dogpile and Mamma Metasearch,
accepts payment to give certain results higher placement)
- Alltheweb "Find it all."
- Vivissimo, what Search Engines will probably look like in the future.
