Interlibrary Loan - Frequently Asked Questions

I need a book (or a magazine article) that this library does not have. How can I get it?

  • Obtain and complete an interlibrary loan form. Now available for printing!
  • Your WCPLS card allows you to borrow any book available from any library within the HAL system.

What is an interlibrary loan?

  • An interlibrary loan is the process of one library lending an item or sending a photocopy to another library
  • Through interlibrary loan, Washington County Public Library patrons have access to library resources through the world.

If I use one of the branch libraries, can I place an interlibrary loan?

  • Yes! Your requests will be forwarded to the Main Library and your borrowed item will be sent to the branch.
  • Return the borrowed item before the due date.

May anyone request an interlibrary loan?

  • Yes! You need to have a current Washington County Public Library System card with no outstanding charges and complete an interlibrary loan form for each title.

What may be borrowed on an interlibrary loan?

  • Most books
  • copies of magazine articles.
  • Microforms

What may not be borrowed on an interlibrary loan?

  • Libraries do not usually loan audiovisual materials, reference books, rare books, or recently published books, including best sellers.

How many items may be borrowed?

  • Each patron can have up to five (5) interlibrary loans in process at one time.

How long does it take to get an item?

  • Most interlibrary loans are received within 14 days.

Is there a charge for  interlibrary loans?

  • At present there are no charges associated with Interlibrary Loan. Occasionally a lending library will specify that a charge is associated with the loan of an item but we will not agree it can't be located anywhere else and unless the patron agrees to pay in advance.

How will I know when my loan is available?

  • A library staff member will call you.

Where and how do I pick up my loan?

  • You my pick up your item at the Main Library circulation desk or branch where the item was requested.
  • You must bring your library card with you. (Note: Some rare or special loans may require in-library use only.)

Can someone else pick up my interlibrary loan?

  • Yes! They must bring your library card.

How long can I keep my interlibrary loan?

  • Loan periods vary from one week to several weeks.
  • Due dates and other special conditions are noted on a paper wrapper affixed to the cover.

Are  interlibrary loans renewable?

  • Some libraries permit renewals.
  • Inquire at the Main Library for renewal information at least one week before the item is due.

Are there fines for interlibrary loans?

  • Borrowers are responsible for the full cost of any lost or damaged items.

Where do I return my interlibrary loan?

  • The items loaned must be returned to the circulation desk where you obtained the item and handed to a staff member.
  • Do not place interlibrary loan materials in the book drops.

How do I get more information about interlibrary loans?

  • Call the Reference Desk at (276) 676-6298.
  • Come by the Reference Desk at the Main Library in Abingdon.
