Canadian Playwright Inaugurates “On Stage at the Library” Series

Rick Whelan, a Canadian playwright, will inaugurate a new series, “On Stage at the Library,” when he discusses the adaptation of  “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” one of the fall repertory shows at Barter Theatre.  Sponsored by the Friends of the Washington County Public Library, the event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 3:00 p.m. in the Conference Room at the library.

Whelan’s appearance will be the first of four visits with playwrights who will be in Abingdon overseeing the production of their plays at Barter Theatre this fall.  Rod Beattie (“Wingfield Farm”) will appear on Oct. 17, Peter Coy (“This Is Our House”) on Oct. 24, and Ron Osborne (“Wise Women”) on Nov. 21.

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” is the moving story of the outcast Quasimodo and his love for the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda.  The Barter run of the show will be from Sept. 22 to Nov. 20.

Whelan began his career as an actor, performing on many of the major stages across North America .  He has had his plays produced at the Actors Theatre in Louisville , Kentucky , and at many theaters across Canada .  The world premiere of Whelan’s adaptation of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” was last fall at the Stratford Festival in Ontario .

Whelan’s screenplay “Piano Man” was a finalist in HBO’s recent Project Greenlight screenwriting contest.

There will be a reception following the discussion.  For more information on the series, contact Ida Patton at (276) 676-6390.
