SUNDAY WITH FRIENDS PROGRAM: THE MUSIC OF LEE SMITH
“Fair and Tender Ladies”, “Oral
History”, “The Devil’s Dream”— the great novels of Lee Smith are
filled with the traditional music of the Appalachian region.
To celebrate the connection, the Friends of the Washington County Public
Library will present a program, “The Music of Lee Smith”, on Sunday,
May 16, at
3:00 p.m.
at the Washington County Public Library.
Abingdon actress Quinn Hawkesworth will read selections from Lee Smith’s
fiction, and Shelby and Linda Stephenson from
Benson
,
North Carolina
, will play and sing the traditional music that Smith has interwoven into
her fiction.
Some of the music selections will include “Lonesome Road Blues”,
“
Cripple Creek
”, “Redwing”, “Georgia Rose”, and many others.
Quinn Hawkesworth was a member of the Barter Theatre Company for several
years. She has performed a one-woman version of “Fair and Tender
Ladies” throughout the south.
Shelby Stephenson is a Lee Smith scholar, a poet, and a musician, who,
with his wife Linda, have performed “The Music of Lee Smith”
throughout the south as well.
The event is part of the “Sunday with Friends” monthly literary series
and is free of charge.
The annual meeting of the Friends of the Washington County Public Library
will take place at

Following the performance there will be a social hour, book and CD sales
and signings.
