October is Health Literacy Month
October is Health Literacy Month and Washington County Public
Library will be offering a program aimed at raising awareness,
particularly among local Senior Citizens, about resources that are
available to help them make informed decisions about health care and
long-term health management. The program will take place in the Library’s
Meeting Room starting at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 18th.
Participating in the program will be Ann Mathews, Reference Librarian at
WCPL, our resident expert on Medical librarianship, and Gary McGeough,
Senior Navigator Community Specialist for the Bristol Tri-Cities area.
Library Staff will provide handouts on evaluating long-term care insurance
and pathfinders to other resources available in the library. Ann Mathews
will demonstrate Medline Plus, an online service of the U.S.
National Library of Medicine, focusing on content that deals specifically
with Senior issues and Senior health. Gary McGeough will demonstrate
Senior Navigator, Virginia’s Resource for Health and Aging. In
addition, a representative from the Social Security will be on hand to
answer questions about the soon to be implemented changes to the Medicare
Prescription Drug Program. The sign up period for the new Program begins
in November and plans will go into effect on January 1st. This
may be your last chance to get answers before making your decision.
Washington
County Public Library is committed to offering the most up to date
information involving health care and health care management to our
patrons. We are especially concerned that our Seniors Citizens and
caregivers are aware of these resources because in many cases they are the
ones who are most likely to need them.
