SOCIAL SECURITY CAN HELP WITH MEDICARE PRESCRIPTION DRUG COSTS.
FIND OUT IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE

Public Library Hosts Discussion for Low Income Beneficiaries

The Medicare Approved Prescription Drug Card Plan that was introduced in 2004 will be phased out at the end of this year. Beginning Jan. 1, 2006, Medicare Part “D” will offer an optional prescription drug benefit for individuals enrolled in Medicare Parts A or B.  Part D will have a monthly premium and a co-payment for most enrollees. Subsidies will be available to assist low income beneficiaries. Part D provides premium subsidies and cost sharing subsidy amounts on a sliding scale basis depending on the individual’s income and resource/asset levels. Eligibility for a low-income subsidy can be determined by either the Social Security Administration or the State.A representative from District Three Senior Services, Area Agency on Aging, Abingdon Office will be available in the Meeting Room at the Washington County PL on June 9 at 2 PM to discuss the impending changes, answer questions and to assist applicants with the enrollment process.

If you have a low income, you can get a head start on enrolling. To help ensure that everyone who qualifies for this assistance will be enrolled on time SSA and local Medicaid offices will begin accepting applications from people with low incomes as early as summer 2005. The SSA process uses a simple application that can be completed on paper and mailed in or completed over the Internet or on the telephone.

For more information call Will Stein at WCPL 276-676-6298, Area Agency on Aging 276-676-2148, or toll-free at 800-541-0933, or the Social Security Administration 800-772-1213.
