VOLUNTEER

It is the policy of the Washington County Public Library Board to develop and maintain a volunteer program to augment library service to the public.

The use of volunteers is meant to supplement, not replace, the Washington County Public Library staff. Volunteers are not used to present on-going programs to the public, but may be invited to present special programs in conjunction with library staff. The inclusion of volunteers in the library service program is meant to enhance service and to involve the community in library activities.

Volunteers are considered unpaid staff and are hired and work under the same policies and procedures. The Volunteer Coordinator may search the application file, and contact appropriate community sources to advertise as needed. Service of volunteers may be accepted or declined based on the needs of the library as determined by the Director. The library may annually acknowledge the service of volunteers in a manner deemed appropriate by the Director.

Potential volunteers must complete the volunteer application form and be interviewed.

Any individual, without regard to race, creed, sex, income level, disability, and national origin is eligible to be considered for participation in the volunteer program. All volunteer applications will be kept on file for a period of two years.

The Washington County Public Library works with Community Services to place individuals who are required to volunteer in the community. The Washington County Public Library will not place individuals guilty of violent crimes and accepts no liability in Community Services placements.
